To Initiate a PINS
Inquiry when the Adolescent is over 15 years old,
Contact: Jerry Rauso at 914-995-6610.

If the adolescent is under 16 years old, Contact: the closest Probation Office.
PURPOSE:
PINS (Persons in Need of Supervision) are adolescents 9 to 17 years old who have committed a status offense (runaway, truancy, beyond parental control, etc.) whose guardian or school requests assistance from Probation. In Westchester County, the PINS population is diverted from the formal judicial system whenever possible and is referred by Probation or by a Family Court Judge to our PINS Diversion Unit. The assessment process conducted by our staff provides the information necessary for appropriate service referrals in the youth's community, and if the referrals are accepted by the family, the case is diverted from further court proceedings for at least 90 days. Our Case Manager helps to assure that each youth accesses all the services that have been recommended. To avert the many crises facing these families, our Therapist sees both adolescents and parents in short-term groups or face-to-face counseling as they wait to begin recommended community treatment.
LOCATION:
The Unit is co-located with the Westchester County Department of Probation at 112 East Post Road, White Plains. Assessments are conducted at three Department of Probation locations in the County:
  • Yonkers - at 53 South Broadway
  • New Rochelle – at 420 North Avenue
  • White Plains - at 112 East Post Road
STAFFING:
A Director, New York State Certified Social Workers, Case Manager, and a Therapist.
SERVICES:
  • Complete comprehensive psycho-social assessments for adolescents up to 18 years old and their families who present for service at the Department of Probation's Adolescent PINS Project;
  • Prepare diagnosis and service recommendations for the youth and family;
  • Assist Probation staff in making referrals to community services and treatment and providing case management counseling services to families.
  • Provide brief therapeutic counseling services to adolescents and their parents.
